Installing and setting up sshguard

This happens in 3 steps:

1. get the latest release
2. compile and install the software
3. do some system setup if needed

Get the latest release

Sshguard 1.0 is the latest stable release. These are sshguard 1.0 features.

Sshguard 1.1beta3 is the latest development release. These are sshguard 1.1 features.

Compile and install

This is documented in these documents:

• (obsolete) compile and install sshguard branch 0.x
• compile and install sshguard branch 1.x

System setup

The following parts of the system may need setup for using sshguard:

• the logging system (how to pass logging to sshguard)
• the firewall (how sshguard will block addresses)

These are the possibile logging systems to interface with sshguard (choose yours):

• syslog feed sshguard
• syslog-ng feed sshguard
• metalog or multilog feed sshguard
• raw log file feed sshguard

These are the available blocking backends (choose yours):

• sshguard with PF (OpenBSD, FreeBSD, NetBSD, DragonFly BSD)
• sshguard with netfilter/iptables (Linux)
• sshguard with IPFW (FreeBSD, Mac OS X)
• sshguard with IP FILTER (FreeBSD, NetBSD, Solaris)
• sshguard with hosts.allow (see hosts_options(5)): simply touch the hosts.allow file (touch /etc/hosts.allow)
